Graveyard of the Atlantic - Parts I and II
Most native Tarheels are aware that the waters off
the Outer Banks constitute one of the most dangerous stretches of coastline in
the world. As this two-part documentary notes, there have been one thousand
documented shipwrecks between Currituck and Cape Lookout (182 miles). Filmmaker
Kevin P. Duffus has created a documentary of misfortune and heroism, so to
speak, in chronicling the history of shipwrecks along the treacherous shallows
of North Carolina’s stormy Atlantic coast. To piece together the visual
portion of his story, Duffus utilizes everything from 16th-century navigation
charts to period photographs to photo images of the coastline taken from
satellites to video footage shot by treasure hunters and recreational divers.
Anyone who’s interested in naval history or the history of North Carolina’s
Outer Banks will enjoy this two-part documentary. Duffus’ work is very
polished, the narration by Triangle (North Carolina’s Raleigh-Durham-Chapel
Hill area) newscaster Bill Leslie is quite articulate, and Duffus makes good use
of archival photos and the personal reminiscences of some Outer Banks residents

who risked their lives to save sailors and passengers in distress during this
era, both before and after the U.S. Life Saving Service stations were in place.
Rasmus Midgett, B.B. Daily and his crew from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Station, and Richard Etheridge’s all-black crew at Pea Island all performed
incredible feats of bravery in the course of rescuing shipwreck victims and were
duly honored by the U.S. government for their heroism. Duffus’ pointed
suggestion that these men--and hundreds like them--have not been properly
memorialized by North Carolina is right on the mark and seems to be an issue
that coastal Carolina residents ought to bring to everyone’s attention. . (45

see both merchant ships and warships going up in flames almost daily in 1942.
One gentlemen recalls nearly piloting his father’s boat onto a surfaced German
U-boat before realizing what it was. Duffus also shows us the tiny British
cemetery on Ocracoke Island where the bodies of four British sailors from the

DIVER. New York. 1899. 378p. Soft wraps. Special edition limited to 100,000
copies. Francis Hopkinson Smith was born in Baltimore, Md., October 23, 1838,
and died in New York City, April 7, 1915. Educated as a mechanical engineer, he
became a contractor and planned and supervised the building of numerous works.
He built for the United States Government the sea wall around Governor's Island,
another at Tompkinsville, Staten Island, and the Race Rock Lighthouse off New
London, and the architectural plans for the Mosquito Inlet Lighthouse. He laid
the foundation and the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor,
and in 1879 he built the Block Island breakwater. A noted engineer, artist, and
writer, Smith soon became an assistant superintendent of a New York iron foundry
during the Civil War. Leaving the foundry, he set himself up as an engineer with
a partner, James Symington. Smith’s engineering firm was in business for
thirty years, contracting many projects with the Federal Government. In his free
time, Smith painted and wrote many notable books, a best seller of which was
this novel Caleb West: Master Diver, recounting his construction of the Race
Rock Lighthouse. A period novel of the day. Overall clean save light overall
browning from age, tight, some wear to wraps and spine but still well intact.

Admiral
Edward Ellsberg
Admiral Ellsberg was a man of many unique and diverse talents, and
his achievements ranged from submarine salvage, petroleum engineering,
public speaking, heroic salvage and engineering feats during World War II,
to the authoring of seventeen books. His salvage of the S-51 in 1925-26
was the first time a submarine had been salvaged in the open ocean.
Several of Ellsberg's inventions, including the underwater cutting torch,
stabilized pontoons, and a system to rapidly raise a sunken sub were
developed for this Herculean task. While he was chief engineer of
Tidewater Oil he developed several patents for the oil refining business.
As a public speaker he was prolific, first about the raising of the S-51,
and then in the 1930's his speeches were about preparedness for war.
During World War II his salvage and engineering feats had a major impact
on the outcome of the war. Few American naval officers have been as
unconventional as Edward Ellsberg and still managed to rise to the rank of
rear admiral. In 1941 Ellsberg managed to refloat two Italian dry docks
that everyone considered unsalvageable. Then, as Gen. Dwight D.
Eisenhower's salvage officer for North Africa, he unblocked the sabotaged
port of Oran, raised more dry docks, and rescued torpedoed ships. In 1944
he was instrumental in preparing the artificial harbors that made the
Normandy
landings a success. These World War II accomplishments earned Ellsberg the
Order of the British Empire but only reluctant notice from his own navy,
although he exerted a lasting influence on U.S. submarine recovery
operations. If these achievements weren't enough, he wrote seventeen books
chronicling his career, arctic exploration, sunken treasure and other
topics.

rare, bright, gilt decorated and edged commemorative plate featuring a
beautiful clear, detailed color image of the "Tillamook
Light House, Seaside, Oregon." c. 1900. One of only a few of
this light that I have had, this fairly large plate has a large 3"
full color image on white of the square wooden light tower atop the
dwelling constructed on the summit of Tillamook Rock. This detailed image
shows the derrick swung out to pick up supplies from a surfboat near the
base. This pretty display piece measures 7 ¼" in diameter and is
enhanced by a decorative scalloped gilded decoration around the edge. Nice
detailed image on the bright white china make a good contrast on this rare
item. Marked "Made in Germany." Quite clean, bright, a beautiful

diagrams of proposals for such a lighthouse with descriptive text,

Gala Day on August 21, 1915. Green felt pennant bears a 5" round

Gala Day Aug. 21, 1915". Pennant is triangular in shape, and measures
17 ½" long by 7 ½" high. There are a few very small moth
holes, but is clean and bright and would be most presentable. An

recent exhibit on Wall Street of Francis’s Metallic life-boats and

Interesting booklet details the basic principles underlying the marking of
coasts and waterways. Includes descriptions of lighthouses, range lights,
lightships, fog signals, buoys, daybeacons, chart symbols, early history,
and more. (VG). $21.

calendar/blotter]
c.1936-1952. Early historic calendar/ink blotters were published by The
First National Bank of Boston [1784-1952] and featured an illustration of
a local lighthouse or Life-Saving Service station. Included is a brief
historical sketch describing the location.
c. Life-Saving Station at Dorchester
Bay. c. February 1952. Description noted that this station was the
first of its kind, and in its unique harbor housed two naphtha launches
and later another driven by steam. (VG). $24.

SPEED UNDER SAIL 1700-1855. New York. 1967. 451p. DJ. When waterborne
transportation was almost entirely by sail, speed became the only standard
by which most maritime historians measured progress in American naval
architecture. In this book, one of America’s leading historians of naval
architecture applies modern principles to examine American sailing vessels
over the years from the standpoint of design and sailing efficiency. From
Colonial times to the highest development of clipper ships, all types of
craft are expertly described and compared. Wonderfully illustrated with
over 130 design plans, as well as 50 drawings and illustrations of the
vessels. Excellent reading and reference for the student of American

20-Pdr. B.L. Rifle. Printed fold-out plate. Printed plate disbound
from report detailing projectile construction, drawn by W. W. Folger,
Lieut. Cmdr., Ordnance Office, Navy Yard, Washington, DC., June 18, 1878.
Printed plate is quite clean, measures 9" x 12" and would be
quite nice framed. Two light folds but clean, crisp. (VG). $12.
7197ss. [newspaper] A New Light-House.
Maine Farmer. November 25, 1852. Short article notes that experiments by
Professor Grant into the new Drummond light have been successful and a
report is to be made to Congress. The Drummond light, the strongest
artificial light known, can be seen by utilizing reflectors throwing a
single ray, and by being rotated constantly, thus throwing a single flash.
The advantages of the system include a considerable cost savings over the
Fresnel light, the best in use. The writer claims that, where ordinary
lighthouses are of little use in fog, Professor Grant’s system is so
intense that they present the effect known as "heat lightning"
as seen through a thick fog. Interesting early work on the subject. Full
newspaper contains four pages with articles of the day, only light
browning, 4 folds. (G). $18.
7197ww. [newspaper] Mississippi
Light-House. THE YANKEE. Boston, Massachusetts. August 1, 1817.
Article remarks on the recent proposals for construction of a lighthouse
at the mouth of the Mississippi River, which noted that stone for the
structure was available in quarries at Havana, Cuba. This article goes
into some detail on deposits of quality stone found near St. Augustine
which was of suitable quality and quantity to supply all of the country’s
light-house needs. This is an extremely early newspaper with a number of
interesting political and military articles of the day. Four pages,
folded, with overall browning from age and a few stains but most readable
and intact. (G). $33.
