1625. (burgee - pennant) U.S. Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat CG-36500. After more than two decades of meritorious Coast Guard service, the CG-36500 was decommissioned in 1968 and sat neglected and nearly forgotten for years. A portion of the procedes from these pennants goes to the Orleans Historical Society for the continued preservation of CG-36500. Measures 12”h x 18”w. (M). $49.95. (x)

Coast Guard Ensign size #5 (15” h x 25”w) and Commissioning Pennant 50” used on small or medium size harbor patrol craft coxswained by William Hyler Lippincott USCG. Also included is a copied document from District Coast Guard Officer, Third Naval District 42 Broadway New York, N.Y reads "To: Lippincott, William H.(581-732) Cox. (R) - Harbor Patrol Fleet. Subj: Commendation for performance on duty; I wish to commend you for splendid performance of duty on 24 April, 1943 in connection with fighting the fire which occurred aboard a vessel loaded with munitions in New York Harbor, N.Y. Your courageous conduct as a member of the crew of a Coast Guard vessel which assisted in the operation was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Naval Service. Stanley V. Parker, Rear Admiral, U.S. Coast Guard. District Coast Guard Officer, Third Naval District." Also too with a corresponding brass plaque. With loading completed on April 24, 1943, SS El Estero had taken on 1,365 tons of mixed munitions that caught fire at dockside in New York Harbor. The Jersey City Fire Department responded, along with two 30-foot fireboats and roughly 60 volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard to help battle the blaze. The ship was successfully moved away and sunk by the heroic efforts of the tug boats and fireboats, averting a major disaster. With a shroud of secrecy soon in place over the events surrounding the sinking of El Estero due in large part to the then-classified mission of the Caven Point Army Depot, public knowledge of the near-disaster remained low until 1944 when the first of several awards for heroism were distributed to the first responders. El Estero herself would remain in her sunken state for the better part of four months before the still-loaded ship was finally raised from the seafloor and towed out of the harbor for use as a naval gunnery target. Coxswain William Hyler Lippincott was one of the Coast Guardsmen commended for his actions that day and this display was undoubtedly a proud family piece for many years. Nicely framed overall h. 24.5", w. 33.5". Ensign and pennant manufactured for Coast Guard has only light wear and age toning and is in very good condition. President of the United States’ Flag & Banner  of the 1916 Design

“..The Executive Flags of the United States are official flags designated to represent particular offices in the executive branch, most notably, the President of the United States…. As early as 1818 a flag to represent the Chief Executive of the United States was considered but it was not until 1882 that a design was officially adopted, during the administration of President Chester Arthur…. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson noted the two military Presidential flags being carried in a parade. With input from Secretary of the Navy Byron McCandless and Assistant Secretary of the Navy (and future President) Franklin Roosevelt, President Wilson decided to combine aspects of the Navy and Army flag into a single flag. The four white corner stars of the Army flag were retained, and added to the Navy flag's design.  The 13 stars surrounded by a ring of rays was replaced by white cloud puffs in an arc above an arc of 13 stars…. The 1916 President's Flag remained official through World War I and World War II, until 1946 when President Truman adjusted the flag due to some criticism that the eagle's head on the 1916 flag faced toward the clutched arrows (to many, signifying war) and toward the left (known in heraldry as the sinister side)….” [from WWW.rareflags.com]. The design in use today includes the eagle turned to the right toward the olive branches and the four corner stars are replaced by a ring of 48 stars, etc.

It is unknown the date of these two pieces and whether they are original from the period 1916-1946, or are more recently manufactured for some reason. One expert on period flags commented” “While the banner does look like it is the style of the President’s flag with the Great Seal and four corner stars, it somehow looks very “new” to me, as if they were made recently but with an older design….” These two pieces were found inside an old Coast Guard station being renovated some years ago.

22153. [Ensign, U. S. Power Squadron c.1950-70’s.] Organized in 1914, USPS is a non profit, educational organization dedicated to making boating safer and more enjoyable by teaching classes in seamanship, navigation and related subjects. The term "Power Squadrons" in the name dates to their founding in 1914 by the power boat division of the Boston Yacht Club. Following the first World War, their ranks broadened to include all types of boats and sailors. While they have many joint programs with the United States Coast Guard, the CG Auxiliary, and the National Ocean Services division of NOAA, USPS is a private, totally self-supporting organization. Members are boating families who contribute to their communities by promoting safe boating through education. USPS has some 60,000 members organized into 450 squadrons across the country and in some US territories. USPS is the world's largest non-profit boating organization and has been honored by three US presidents for its civic contributions. This U.S. Power squadron ensign dates probably from the 1950-70’s and would have been flown from a private power boat by a squadron member. The USPS ensign is flown as a signal to others that the boat is commanded by an active member of USPS in good standing. The preferred location for flying the USPS ensign is the starboard yardarm or spreader, underway or at anchor, or made fast to shore, on motor and sailing craft. It may be flown from the stern staff in place of the U.S. or yacht ensign, but this is usually done only on smaller boats that lack a mast. On sailboats underway, it may be flown from the aftermost peak or leech in place of other ensigns. The USPS ensign may be flown at its proper location on boats displaying the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary ensign to indicate the owner is a member of both organizations; however, it cannot be flown if the craft is under Coast Guard orders. This flag is professionally manufactured and machine sewn. It has a white anchor stitched on a red background circled by 13 stars individually sewn on both sides. It has 6 vertical white stripes and 7 vertical blue stripes. Each of the white and blue stripes are 4" wide. Flag is made of cotton and has reinforced edge with 2 brass grommets. Marked "Defiance cotton bunting, [by] Annin". Flag measures 34" x 52", is bright and clean, and in very nice condition. (VG+). $76. (similar shown)

22551. [flag] U. S. Coast Guard Ensign Semper Paratus. Recent lightweight U. S. Coast Guard flag. (35"h x 60"w), perfect for occasional hoisting or to decorate your den or study. Flag is made of 100% polyester and bears the present design consisting of U. S. eagle and shield with bunched stars above, with "United States Coast Guard" above, and "Semper Paratus 1790" below. Wonderful for your display at a most affordable price. New. $12.95.

22539. [flag] U. S. Coast Guard SOPA Pennant. c.1940-50’s. Official U. S. Coast Guard Senior Officer Present Afloat (SOPA) pennant. Pennant consists of a dark blue equilateral triangle measuring 48 inches on each side with Coast Guard shield on crossed anchors sewn on in center. Ensign manufactured for Coast Guard use, made of 100% wool bunting. Whenever two or more ships are in the same port, the ship on which the senior officer is embarked flies the senior officer present afloat pennant, unless he is flying a personal flag clearly indicating his seniority. The pennant is displayed from the inboard halyard of the starboard main yardarm, but only while in port. For many years, the U.S. Coast Guard’s "SOPA" pennant was a blue triangle (now the "subdivision" signal pennant), but with the establishment of standard signal procedures for NATO, it was replaced in about 1950 by the "starboard" signal pennant. Family who owned these three flags indicated that this came off a WW II convoy escort but we have no proof. There is considerable lettering on the hem but too light to make out. No manufacturer noted. Condition clean, crisp and bright, moderate moth holes but most fairly small 1/8", a few ¼". Extremely rare, sought after for display. (VG-). $148 net.

28392b. (semaphore signal flag) U.S. Coast Guard semaphore signal flag “O” Oscar  c.1940. Original semaphore flag originating from the U.S. Coast Guard Buoy Tender Mesquite WAGL / WLB-305 (1943). Flag is linen or cotton/wool  and measures about 16” square, and include cloth ties. The Semaphore flag signaling system is a system for conveying information at a distance using an alphabet signalling system based on the waving of a pair of hand-held flags in a particular pattern. The flags are held, arms extended, in various positions representing each of the letters of the alphabet. The pattern resembles a clock face divided into eight positions: up, down, out, high, low, for each of the left and right hands (LH and RH) six letters require the hand to be brought across the body so that both flags are on the same side. This system was used bu the Life Saving Service and early Coast Guard for communicating with vessels, and is still used during underway replenishment at sea and is acceptable for emergency communication in daylight or, using lighted wands instead of flags, at night. The flag is square, this one being red and yellow, divided diagonally (“Oscar”). Flag is as original but without handles. Flag is as new, having never been used and date from the 1940’s. (F-). One “O” flag $12.

28392c. (wig wag signal flag) U.S. Coast Guard Wig-Wag Signal  c. c.1953-1966. Original white on red wig-wag signal flag dates from c.1953-1966 as it was found with a c.1953-1966 Coast Guard ensign at an estate of a retired Coast Guardsman. Flag appears to be nylon/wool blend and measures about 23” square, with ties on two corners. The oldest flag system associated with the US Army Signal Corps and later used by the Revenue Cutter Service, Coast Guard and Navy, is called Wig-wag. The name reflects the concept of back and forth movement as a means of signaling through motion. Flags used were white on red, red on white, or white on black, depending on the background colors. There were generally three sizes depending on signal distances - two, four, or six feet square. Wig-wag is the signaling system was developed for military field operations by Army surgeon Albert J. Myer prior to the Civil War. Myers’ Wig-wag system uses one flag for signaling - the position of the flags, left, right, front, represent the numerals 1, 2, 3 respectively and combinations of these numerals are used to convey the message. Flag is as original with cloth ties and is nearly unused except for very light fraying at the two outer corners. Dates before 1966. Rare. (VG+). $54.

Pennant is made of wool , tip worn 3” from use, tears at hem, moderate to heavy mothing. Original wood pole is 35" long. Believe that it dates to 1930’s-40’s. The Sacramento Yacht Club (South River Road, West Sacramento Cal.) is the oldest boating organization in the Sacramento River-Delta region. SYC's official founding dates to 1929, with roots reaching back to rowing clubs in the 1800s. The club called several locations homeport, but in 1947 purchased a former Navy barge and used it as a clubhouse for more than three decades. Early yacht club burgees are quite difficult to find.
